Austrians are feeling the pinch of inflation in the energy sector, not only in terms of electricity and gas, but also in terms of fuel, where we are among the most expensive countries in Europe. While the EU is discussing the end of combustion engines, countries in northern Europe are pulling ahead in terms of the share of electric cars.
The sharp rise in inflation in Austria is also noticeable at gas stations. Prices have risen significantly recently, putting Austria above the European average, according to the mobility club ÖAMTC. Diesel rose by 6.5 cents per liter in November compared to October, and premium gasoline by 2.3 cents. The monthly average for diesel was 1.577 euros/litre, and for premium gasoline, 1.526 euros.
On Friday, the ÖAMTC explained that although there have also been price increases in most other EU countries, Austria is one of the countries with a very sharp rise.
Electric cars are on the rise in northern Europe
The Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ) also reports that in northern Europe, for example, in Norway, 95 percent of newly registered cars this year are electric cars. There are now more electric cars than diesel cars on the roads there.
Denmark is the EU leader in electric cars: 67 percent of new cars already have electric drives. In Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Belgium, one in three newly registered cars is an electric car. Austria ranks eighth in the EU with a share of 21 percent.
